One day, I had stopped to get chicken breasts, but boy, did I end up getting more than I bargained for.
CRASH—Shiiiit, did I really just do that? This is what I said to myself as I realized that, in a mostly empty parking lot, I had somehow managed to back into a really nice-looking truck. I got out and saw that my vehicle didn’t even have a scuff, but the truck had some damage.
I had already been having a bad week, but this was the cherry on top of the cake.
I could have driven away—I really don’t think anyone would have seen me. But, ashamed, I knew I had to be honest.
So I went back into the store and asked, “Do you by chance know whose vehicle that truck may be?”
The man replied, “Yeah, it’s my son’s. I’m borrowing it while mine is getting fixed.”
Shit—I thought again.
I said, “I’m so sorry to say this, but I just backed into it. I have to go get my kids right now and am in a rush, but please take my information and give me yours and/or your son’s. I promise I’ll fix this as soon as I can.”
I felt sick as I drove home, knowing I had damaged this man’s son’s beautiful truck—and that I’d also have to relay this to my husband.
But as I drove, I started praying and asking God to have mercy on me for whatever would come from the damage and cost.
The next day, I got a text message that said, “Hey, this is the man from the store about the truck incident.”
I gulped, knowing this was probably going to be a rough message to read.
He said, “I talked to my son and told him what happened, and how apologetic you were. He said that it’s okay and not to worry about it.”
I replied, “Thanks for his understanding, but what do you mean? How much do I owe him and/or the insurance?”
He said, “Nothing.”
I started crying and thanking God, but I couldn’t leave it at that. “That is way too kind of you. Please let me at least buy your family a meal or something else.”
He said, “That isn’t necessary. You just take care.”
Man, is there ever power in prayer.
